Love - Affair with Hair: Guest Editor Daisy Megan

Did you know that every individual, on an average, has around 100,000 hairs on a healthy scalp? Every hair strand is made up of three layers; there is cuticle as the outermost layer, which also acts as protective layer for the two inner layers.

Signs of healthy hairs

If your hairs are glossy, then it is sign that your hairs are healthy. This is so because the outermost layer cuticle is lying flat and reflects the light making them appear shiny and glossy. With scales of cuticle lying flat, they are overlapped tightly; and this protects the inner two layers from damages from sun, heat, or other hazards.

What happens when hairs are damaged? The damage in hairs causes the scales to separate or fall lose apart; thus, the inner layers are also not so well protected, and hairs become dry. This may make hairs fragile and dull looking.

What are the factors that affect our hairs, and what can help us to keep them healthy? Let’s have a look:

Diet and Lifestyle

These are the two main factors having direct and immediate influence on our hairs and body. If you go for too much junky, and don’t care to eat balanced diet with good amount of fruits and vegetables, your whole body has to suffer including your hairs.

Some diseases also can lead to hair damage. Advice is to eat healthy, and avoid fatty and processed foods as much as possible. Include a daily regime of exercising in your routine. These small changes can do wonder to your hairs and health in general.

Hair Tips

It is extremely essential to clean and brush your hairs regularly. Brushing stimulates the oil producing glands in the scalp. This natural oil helps to make hair healthy and shiny. You can also rinse your hairs with some lemon juice mixed in water, after washing to give extra shine to hairs.

Most people opt for chemical hair dye color to cover their grey hairs, or just for the sake of giving different shades to their hairs. The chemicals present in these hair dyes can do much harm to your hairs and scalp. You should look for natural alternatives to color your hairs when requires, such as Henna, or other chemical free hair dyes.

There are some things which we are born with, and are difficult to change, but we can surely do something to keep them healthier.
