Nandita Das wins Critics Best Film Award for her directorial debut Firaaq

2008 Hindi film Firaaq, the directorial debut of Nandita Das, has picked up the Critics' Choice Award for Best Film. The film, set one month after the 2002 violence in Gujarat, India, and looks at the aftermath in terms of the effects on the lives of everyday people. The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval, Paresh Rawal, Raghubir Yadav, Sanjay Suri, Shahana Goswami, Amruta Subhash and Tisca Chopra. The film has largely been well received, both locally and internationally. It won three awards at the Asian Festival of First Films in Singapore in December 2008, the Special Prize at the International Thessaloniki Film Festival, an award at the Kara Film Festival, and Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by Government of France.

As an actress, Nandita Das is known for her critically acclaimed performances in Fire (1996), Earth (1998), Bawandar (2000) and Aamaar Bhuvan (2002). For the Filmfare Awards she was present with her husband. Firaaq won awards in the categories below:

Jashnn, the music within, the story of a 'nobody' who wants to be a 'somebody', features Adhyayan Suman, Anjana Sukhani, Shahana Goswami and Humayun Saeed in the main roles.

Akash Verma (Adhyayan), 20, wants to become a big-time singer, who wants to outdo the existing playback singers. But he can’t get into the groove of a distinctive voice or style of rendering songs that can propel him to the top of the lot. He's shattered by life and living on the mercy of his elder sister Nisha (Shahana), who in order to bear the cost of his decent life style has become the mistress of a rich businessman, Aman Bajaj (Humayun Saeed).

He hates the truth and also Aman Bajaj. He is also in the darkest phase of his life. But, as every filmy twist has to have, Sara (Anjana Sukhani), Aman's sister tries to mentor him. Sara makes him realize that he is an extremely talented singer who is through a bad phase. She convinces him not to give up hope.

Sara's love and support helps Akash and he discovers his own voice. He becomes an overnight star and brings dignity to the life of his sister, humbles his biggest detractor Aman Bajaj and also lives up to the faith that Sara had in him all along.

The forthcoming Hindi movie from the Bollywood stable, ‘Jashnn’ is directed by Raksha Mistry and Hasnain S Hyderabadwala. The film has music by a new composer duo Toshi and Sharib. The movie is presented by Vishesh Films of Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt. The main cast of the movie includes Adhyayan Suman (as Akash Verma), Anjana Sukhani (as Sara), Shahana Goswami (as Nisha) and Humayun Saeed (as Aman Bajaj). The film is a musical and the singers are K K, Shreya Ghosal, Nouman Javaid, Shaan, Toshi Sabri and Sharib Sabri and the lyrics are written by Kumaar, Nouman Javaid and Nilesh Mishra and the Cassettes and CDs are from T-Series.
