With a plethora of modelling reality shows out there, the BBC's Britain's Missing Top Model, which starts on Tuesday, provides a welcomed insight into the lives of eight disabled models. Set to a similar structure of Britain's Next Top Model, they compete to win a modelling contract and a photo-shoot in at top glossy, not Vogue but British Marie Claire. Contestants include a woman with one arm, another who is deaf, and a model who is wheel-chair bound due to a degenerative neuro-muscular disorder.
Just as the NY Mag points out, the series is an opportunity not only to witness the inequality models (both disabled and able-bodied) face on a daily basis, but it also paints a picture of how industry folks, such as editors, photographers, and agents, really feel about models with disabilities.
Take for instance, Marie Claire editor Marie O'Riordan, who also doubles as a judge on the show. She says: "When I first heard about the programme, my immediate thought was would it all be women in wheelchairs and I knew that if it was going to be some sort of freak show, I didn't want to be involved. But I very quickly realised there are many disabled people who are not in wheelchairs, and that is just one of the many preconceptions we all hold about disability."
Blindly ignorant, or refreshingly honest? I am inclined to think the latter. As the Daily Mail, highlights, 'whether the winner will go on to have a career when the cameras stop rolling remains to be seen'. That is true, but regardless of this fact, it is the recognition of the struggle alone, in an industry so rooted in the notion of appearance, that is the real winner.
Britain's Missing Top Model, part of BBC 3's Beauty Season, starts on Tuesday, July 1 at 9pm.

Namun Gadis kelahiran Jakarta 10 Agustus 1989 itu mengaku tak pernah membuat foto-foto itu. Foto yang beredar itu adalah foto yang diambil oleh seseorang secara diam-diam.
Pemeran ‘Solehah’ itu mengaku bingung mengapa foto-foto dirinya dipermasalahkan. Apalagi foto itu diambil ketika ia sedang berenang di pantai. “Menurut saya itu satu hal yang wajar karena saya difotonya di pantai kok,” tuturnya santai.
Pesinetron yang sering mendapat peran baik-baik itu mengaku tak khawatir dengan image dirinya pasca foto berbikini. Ia tidak mempermasalahkan image aslinya dan peran yang seringkali berlawanan.

Geby adalah seorang gadis Bali yang kuliah di Bali dan bunuh diri karena ditinggal kekasihnya. Ceritanya begini, waktu dia jalan-jalan naik mobil bersama teman-temannya, tanpa sengaja dia mengetahui pacarnya sedang bersama cewek lain. Tanpa pikir panjang, dia segera ngebut pulang kerumah. Ternyata sang pacar mengetahui kehadiran Gaby. Kemudian sang pacar mengejar Gaby, dan ternyata tanpa diduga, sang kekasih tersebut mengalami kecelakaan dan akhirnya meninggal dunia. Setelah mengetahui bahwa sang kekasih meninggal dunia, Gaby sangat sedih dan membuat sebuah lagu berjudul Tinggal Kenangan. Dia membawakan lagu tersebut di sebuah kafe dengan kondisi meminum obat dosis tinggi. Dan ternyata sebelum lagunya berakhir, Gaby telah terlebih dahulu meninggal dunia. Lagunya Coba Download Di sini
Versi Kedua
Lagu ini diciptakan oleh Pay, yang terinspirasi dari pengalaman pribadinya yang ditinggalkan kekasihnya yang keburu nikah di tahun 2003. Pertama kali Pay dkk menyanyikan lagu itu dalam momen ulang tahun sanggar seni mahasiswa Sekolah Tinggi Manajemen Informatika dan Komputer (STMIK) Dipanegara, Sang Dipa, pada 17 Juli 2004.
Pay dan beberapa temannya pertama memainkan lagu 'Jauh' dengan versi live akustik, yang dilantunkan Andi Besse atau Abe, sang vokalis Sang Dipa.
Penampilan mereka pun direkam ala kadarnya dalam format MP3. Sementara versi kedua lagu ini baru direkam di studio oleh band Caramel, band yang didirikan Pay dan kawan-kawannya. Suara vokalisnya pun sudah berganti, Abe digantikan Riri.
Demikian cerita Pay yang ditemui detikcom di studio radio Prambors Makassar, pukul 13.30 Wita, Senin (9/6/2008). "Itu asli karya saya," ujar Pay.
Jika ada pihak yang mengklaim karyanya itu, Pay dan personel band Caramel lainnya takkan tinggal diam, jalur hukum segera akan mereka tempuh. Hingga saat ini, Komisi A DPRD Makassar sudah merespon kekhawatiran mereka dan lagu-lagu mereka pun sudah mereka daftarkan di kantor Dephukham Sulsel.
"Lagu ini sebenarnya tiba-tiba muncul saat mengkhayalkan Rika di malam lebaran Idul Fitri tahun 2003," ujar Pay mengenang eks kekasihnya yang terlanjur diboyong lelaki lain di pelaminan. Inikah akhir misteri lagu Geby?

Julia Alexandratou was born on November 24, 1986 to a father who hails from Kefalonia, named Zisimos Alexandratos and a mother who hails from London, England, named Allison Hunt-Alexandratou. Her father is a highly-educated mechanical engineer, while her mother is a former model. She also has a sister three years her senior, Artemis Alexandratou.
From a very young age, Julia's beauty and talent were revealed. Along with her mother, she modeled in numerous magazines and children's fashion ads. She has modelled since the age of 4 and has also participated and won in countless pageants. At age 7, she was enrolled in ballet lessons, and later on in vocal and acting training, and she exhibited great potential. Julia entered the Miss Young pageant in 2002, and conquered the first prize, at the age of only 15. During times where there were familial problems, Julia lived in London with her mother for a couple of years. After these times Julia pulled back from her artistic training.
After the competition, Alexandratou had exclaimed I've worn a lot of crowns in my life. I really didn't need another one. Many people took this as ego, but Julia had later expressed that what she meant was that I like the work of a model but I am not crazy about it, and that she was eager to pusrue other things. A few months later, Julia was a co-host to the hit show Megalicious Chart Live! alongside Mad TV presenter Themis Georgandas. She did many television appearances, and in the course of one year, did over 10 magazine covers on magazines such as Nitro, Diva, and Celebrity. Losing the pageant seemed to have sky-rocketed her fame, and the publicity seemed to never end for the youg artist.
