Fashion 101: Publications and Magazines

Beverly Johnson, first african american women on cover of vogue magazine

Because I have a Bachelor's degree in Apparel Merchandising and Design, I like to discover the latest fashion trends but also expand my knowledge about various aspects of fashion. To know about fashion is more than shopping for a pair of shoes or finding a cute blouse. True fashion is about art and the elements of design (line, shape, color, and balance.)

And one important aspect of being a "fashion" major is to stay abreast of several fashion publications. Fashion publications help to shape the direction of style and the careers of those working in the fashion industry. Without books and magazines, we would not know the history of women wearing hosiery; the inspiration behind the creation of blue jeans; or the life of fashion designer Coco Chanel. Listed below are fashion publications to help motivate and inspire our "passion for fashion."

Fashion Books:

1. The Lucky Shopping Manual: Building and Improving Your Wardrobe Piece by Piece

2. Style: A to Zoe

3. American Fashion/Menswear/Accessories

4. Chanel: Her Style and Life

5. In Vogue: The Illustrated History of World's Most Famous Fashion Magazine

6. InStyle: Instant Style

7. Effortless Style

Fashion Magazines:

1. Vogue

2. W

3. Elle

4. Women's Wear Daily

5. Harper's Bazaar

6. InStyle

7. Allure

kim's favorite fashion classes/textbooks: historic costume, visual merchandising, clothing throughout the life-cycle and apparel merchandising.
