Most of you know Petra Nemcova from her Sports Illustrated Photo shoots. Petra won the opportunity to model "swimsuits" for Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue in 2002, which was her second appearance in the magazine, She was the cover model for the 2003 Swimsuit Issue. Since that defining moment, Petra has taken the modeling world by storm. Nemcova has been a cover model for Elle, Harper's Bazaar and other magazines, and has appeared in ads for Cartier and Victoria's Secret. Being born and raised in Karvina, in the Czech Republic, has given here the nickname of "Czech Chick".

Atlee was killed, and Nemcova suffered a broken pelvis and serious internal injuries, but managed to hold onto the top of a palm tree, reportedly for eight hours, until she was rescued and airlifted to an island hospital nearby. Her first interview after her near-death experience was with Diane Sawyer on ABC's Primetime Live, on March 9, 2005. Not for a modeling gig or print ad shoot, but for charity purposes. The gorgeous model went with Wyclef Jean, who is well-known for helping out his native land Haiti, an impoverished Caribbean island. The two celebrity philanthropists were there to work on a restaurant project being initiated by Wyclef's charity group Yele Haiti. The restaurant will be a boost to the local economy as it will employ fifteen women, and will give the townies a wholesome place to hang out. The singer also toured Petra Nemcova in his former play grounds, and the site of a computer lab that had been set up by his charity too. Says Wyclef, "If you want to change a country, unfortunately you're not going to be able to help eight million people at one time. But if you can get one or two or three and start to make that change, that will make the difference." She was found in her home country of Czech Republic by a modeling scout as a teenager, and the rest is history. nemcova has graced the cover of hundreds of magazines, done thousands of photo shoots, and advertised dozens of products. Unfortunately, Atlee has not been seen since the tsunami and he was most likely killed and washed out to sea.

Supermodel Karolina Kurkova has been attacked by the Brazilian media for appearing too fat on the runway.

Czech Kurkova was slated in the country for appearing in a bikini with what critics called "back fat, love handles and cellulite".

Kurkova, 24, is best known for being a Victoria's Secret Angel whose superfit physique has graced the pages of fashion magazines around the world.

But her recent appearance at the Cia Maritima show during Sao Paulo Fashion Week had fashion critics up in arms.

An article in a Brazilian paper about the leggy 5'11" Kurkova described how "shocked" the audience was when she appeared looking uncharacteristically chubby with "cellulite on her butt."

Kurkova is one of the world's highest-paid models, according to Forbes.

In addition to Victoria's Secret, she has featured in campaigns for Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel and Balenciaga.

The fashion industry has been under fire recently for its promotion of skinny models and pledged to adopt a more healthy image for young girls who often force themselves to become thin in the battle to secure a place among the top tier.

In 2006, Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston, 21, made headlines when she died of anorexia on the eve of a Paris photoshoot after subsisting on a diet of apples and tomatoes for several months. At 5'8", she weighed just 39.9kg.

In 2007, Uruguayan fashion model Eliana Ramos, 18, died of a heart attack believed to be related to malnutrition.

The shocking deaths prompted a public outcry and heavy criticism of the fashion industry for promoting unattainable standards of beauty.

Victoria Secret Model Adriana Lima Engaged to Basketball Star

Supermodel Adriana Lima accepted a big gift on her birthday last weekend—an engagement ring from boyfriend basketball star Marko Jaric, reports People Magazine.

“He asked and she said yes. They are both incredibly happy and couldn't be more in love,” says Lima’s publicist James Weir.

The Brazilian model turned 27 on Thursday and she and her fiancé, who plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves, have been dating for about nine months.

“I was not the person to fall in love easily. I am a difficult person from that standpoint,” Jaric told People magazine back in March. “Now, it's a little different situation.”

The marriage will be the first for both.
